Stroke

Stroke

A Stroke is the loss of blood supply to the brain tissue, its either thromboembolic stroke 85%, haemorrhagic stroke 15%.

Neurosurgical role in stroke is either to remove part of the skull to give more
space for the brain to expand during the acute stage (decompressive craniectomy), or to open the skull and evacuate blood collection in the parenchyma of the brain (Craniotomy and evacuation of the intracerebral heamatoma).

In both situations, the surgeries will not reverse the damage already happened by stroke, but rather to save the life of the patient by preventing secondary complication. Most of the time, if the prognosis is poor if the patient needed neurosurgical intervention
