Head Injury, or traumatic brain injuries(TBI), are some of the most common causes of disability and death in adults. The injury can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on the nature of bleeding inside the skull or due to any damage to the brain.
Even with simple or mild TBI, the consequences may be severe and devastating.
Possible reasons for neurosurgery may include:
- Severe bleeding inside the skull, either around the meninges or inside the brain paranchyma, which puts pressure on the brain and may result in brain damage and, in severe cases, death.
- Severe brain swelling as a response to significant head injury which can also put pressure on the brain
- Cerebral contusions – bruises on the brain, which can develop into blood clots.
- Hydrocephalus , accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid inside the brain.
- Skull fractures
